SEO for Therapists | NM Agency

You have a website. It has been live for a while now, it says you are accepting new clients, and still the same handful of referral sources are doing all the work of sending people your way. Meanwhile someone in your city is typing exactly what you treat into Google at eleven at night, and a different practice, not yours, is the one they find.

In case you are new here, we are Natalia Maganda, the website manager for therapists and practice owners. A quick note before we go further. We do not offer SEO as its own standalone service. It comes with us when you become a new website management client. So if your practice needs to actually show up on search, think beyond a few tweaks to your homepage. We build the site, write the pages, and manage the SEO behind it, all as one engagement. Below we will walk through why most therapist websites stay invisible, what real SEO for a therapy practice actually requires, and how working together looks from the first call to launch.

What SEO for therapists actually means

SEO for therapists is not a plugin you install or a few keywords sprinkled into your About page. It is the structural work that tells Google, and increasingly AI search tools, exactly who you help, where you practice, and why your site deserves to be the answer when someone searches for support tonight.

Done well, your site has a dedicated page for every specialty you treat, your location built into the places Google actually reads, and a Google Business Profile that is active instead of forgotten. Done poorly, your site is four or five pages trying to speak to everyone at once, and it competes for attention against directories with far more authority than a single practice will ever have on its own.

Why most therapist websites stay invisible

  • One page trying to do everything: anxiety, trauma, couples, and grief all compressed into a single services page, so none of it ranks for anything specific.
  • The location problem: your city gets mentioned once on the homepage instead of built into your titles, headings, and actual page content.
  • A neglected Google Business Profile: the single biggest lever for local search sits untouched since the day it was created.
  • Nobody is assigned to it: the site launched once, and nothing has been added or updated since, while Google keeps rewarding sites that stay active.
  • Directories doing the work your own site should be doing: every inquiry routes through a listing that shares your traffic with every other therapist in your city.

Most of these trace back to the same handful of structural mistakes, the ones we break down in the most common private practice website mistakes.

Signs your SEO isn't pulling its weight

  • If you search your own specialty plus your city right now, does your website appear anywhere on the first page?
  • Do you have a dedicated page for each specialty you treat, or one page trying to cover all of them?
  • When was the last time you posted anything to your Google Business Profile?
  • Are new inquiries still coming almost entirely from referrals, with almost nothing from search?

That gap usually comes down to fundamentals more than anything mysterious, the same ones we cover in ranking your practice higher on Google Maps.

Who this is for

This is a strong fit if you:

  • Are a licensed therapist or private practice owner whose website exists but rarely brings in a new inquiry
  • Have specialties or a niche that your current site does not clearly reflect
  • Want your visibility to come from search instead of depending on the same few referral relationships
  • Want the job of maintaining your SEO off your desk permanently, not patched for another season

This may not be the best fit if you:

  • Are looking for SEO as its own standalone project, separate from a website we build and manage. We do not offer it that way. It comes bundled with a new website management engagement.
  • Need results guaranteed within a set number of weeks, since SEO does not work on a fixed timeline
  • Need to approve every word and pixel yourself rather than trusting a strategy you have signed off on

How we approach SEO for therapists

We do not treat SEO as a task list handed to you at the end of a website launch. When we build or manage your site, the keyword strategy, the specialty pages, and the local search work happen inside that same engagement, not as an add on quote or a second invoice.

We start with your actual specialties and your actual city, not generic therapy keywords. Every specialty gets its own page, written in your voice, built to answer the exact search a client is typing in, whether that is a specific modality, a specific concern, or a specific combination of the two.

Sessions with us are strategy and approval, not homework. We map your specialties, your location, and your ideal client on an initial call, build the site and the SEO structure around that, and bring you in to review and approve rather than produce any of it yourself.

Because your website and your SEO come from the same strategy session and the same engagement, everything launches already working to get you found, instead of a pretty site that still has to be reconciled with a search strategy after the fact.

What working together looks like

We open with a strategy call to map your specialties, your city, and the client you most want to reach. From there we build your full site with SEO structured into every page from the start, present it for your review, and refine it until it feels unmistakably like your practice. Once it is live, we continue managing your Google Business Profile, your content, and your rankings every month, so nothing has to be rebuilt from scratch each season.

How it works:

Onboarding, strategy, copy, design, tech and foundational SEO

Most Squarespace and Showit designers charge even more than me, but they deliver a pretty site and leave the SEO up to you. I do not do that. I literally do everything for you, starting with the keyword and specialty strategy your site is actually built around.

20+ page website launch with copy that reflects your depth and design that magnetizes your clients

It is time for your practice to become the answer Google gives when someone in your city searches for exactly what you offer, with a site built to rank from the day it launches.

Transition to management. Review a blog batch. Approve it. Get back to your life. That is the whole assignment.

You see clients. We handle the rest. Ongoing content, Google Business Profile management, and reporting so your visibility keeps compounding instead of resetting every few months.

Tips while you get started

  • Search your own specialty plus your city right now, in an incognito window, and write down exactly who shows up. That list tells you more about your real competition than any guide can. Ranking your practice higher on Google Maps is worth reading right after.
  • List every specialty you treat separately, in the plain language a client would search for it, not the clinical term you would use with a colleague. What to include on a specialty page walks through exactly what each one needs.
  • If you serve more than one city or neighborhood, do not assume your homepage can rank for all of them at once. Location pages, the secret SEO strategy for therapy practices explains why a dedicated page usually outperforms a single generic one.
  • Claim and finish your Google Business Profile completely, including your exact categories and services, before you touch anything else on your site.

Frecuently Asked Questions

How long does SEO take to show results?

The honest answer is it really depends. We have had clients 8 months in and still haven't gotten their first inquiry, while others had a very different result in their first 6 months. One strategy is not fundamentally different than the other. There are many factors Google and AI consider when recommending your site: in most cases it's demand in the local area, niche, specialty, competition, domain authority, domain age, relevance, and more. As someone who's been doing SEO for almost a decade, I will always encourage you to start. The sooner you start, the faster you can start watering your SEO garden. Starting is better than waiting while other practices catch the traffic that could be yours.

Is SEO important for therapists?

It is, simply because of where clients actually start looking. Most people searching for a therapist begin on Google, often late at night or in a moment of real need, and a practice that does not show up there is invisible to a huge share of the people it could actually help.

What are the best SEO keywords for therapists?

The best keywords pair your specialty with real client language and, often, your location, rather than broad clinical terms. A page built around a specific concern in the words a client would actually type usually outperforms a generic page trying to rank for therapy as a whole.

Can I do SEO myself?

You can, and some of it is genuinely learnable in an afternoon. The harder part is doing it consistently for months while you are also running a practice and seeing clients all day, which is usually where DIY SEO quietly stops happening.

How do I tell if my SEO is working?

Watch your search positions, your impressions in Google Search Console, and where new inquiries say they found you, not just your traffic number alone. A real report should be able to name which pages moved and why, not hand you one vague figure with no explanation behind it.

Ready to get this off your desk?

If your website needs to actually start working for you, remember it is not something we sell as SEO alone. It comes as part of a full website management engagement, the site, the strategy, and the ongoing work that keeps you visible in your city. If you are ready to hand that off, we invite you to apply for a strategy call.
